    Persistent perceptual delay for head movement onset relative to sound onset with and without vision

    Knowing when the head moves is crucial information for the central nervous system in order to maintain a veridical representation of the self in the world for perception and action. Our head is constantly in motion during everyday activities, and thus the central nervous system is challenged with determining the relative timing of multisensory events that arise from active movement of the head. The vestibular system plays an important role in the detection of head motion as well as compensatory reflexive behaviours geared to stabilizing the self and the representation of the world. Although the transduction of vestibular signals is very fast, previous studies have found that the perceived onset of an active head movement is delayed when compared to other sensory stimuli such as sound, meaning that head movement onset has to precede a sound by approximately 80ms in order to be perceived as simultaneous. However, this past research has been conducted with participants’ eyes closed. Given that most natural head movements occur with input from the visual system, could perceptual delays in head movement onset be the result of removing visual input? In the current study, we set out to examine whether the inclusion of visual information affects the perceived timing of vestibular-auditory stimulus pairs. Participants performed a series of temporal order judgment tasks between their active head movement and an auditory tone presented at various stimulus onset asynchronies. Visual information was either absent (eyes-closed) or present while either maintaining fixation on an earth or head-fixed LED target in the dark or in the light. Our results show that head movement onset has to precede a sound with eyes-closed. The results also suggest that head movement onset must still precede a sound when fixating targets in the dark with a trend for the head having to move with less lead time with visual information and with the VOR active or suppressed. Together, these results suggest perception of head movement onset is persistently delayed and is not fully resolved with full field visual input

    THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN MACROECONOMIC VARIABLES ON U.S. MEAT EXPORTS

    This paper examines the impact of domestic and foreign macroeconomic variables on U.S. meat exports, including beef, pork, turkey, and chicken, in the context of an open economy. The results show that foreign macroeconomic variables exert more significant and persistent effects on U.S. meat exports than domestic macroeconomic variables. The implication is that the U.S. can increase its meat exports more effectively by expending efforts on international macroeconomic policy coordination rather than on domestic sectoral policy. The results also suggest that macroeconomic models of the agricultural sector should include foreign variables and should not be limited only to domestic ones.International Relations/Trade,

    Spontaneous patterning of quantum dots at the air-water interface

    Nanoparticles deposited at the air-water interface are observed to form circular domains at low density and stripes at higher density. We interpret these patterns as equilibrium phenomena produced by a competition between an attraction and a longer-ranged repulsion. Computer simulations of a generic pair potential with attractive and repulsive parts of this kind, reproduce both the circular and stripe patterns. Such patterns have a potential use in nanoelectronic applications

    The Boat Recovery Simulation was a collaboration between the U.S. Coast Guard and NASA. The experiment was conducted at the NASA Ames Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS). The goals were to (1) design a VMS experiment that can accurately simulate the motion of high sea conditions and to (2) collect data for the U.S. Coast Guard on human performance related to small boat recovery operations. The experiment setup included a software operation model designed around empirical boat position data; a replica boat section manufactured to incorporate real-world task elements; and the means to collect objective and subjective data from human participants. The VMS provided a viable testbed to assess certified U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers task performance while in motion

Online attention is an important form of regional brand awareness of agricultural products on the Internet. Taking the apple industry as an example, this paper uses 6 years of data from the Baidu search index to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of apple brands in China. The study has demonstrated a way to analyze online brand attention and its relationship with regional brands. Further studies are to be made in more detailed attributes associated with the forming of attention to enhance the online brand attention and promote agricultural products

    Best Practices in Managing Social Media for Business

    The mixed results of social media impacting on businesses have motivated this research to understand the best practices affecting the brand equity of a company utilizing the social media in business. Literature review of relevant theories is conducted. The industry publications of companies doing well in social media are analyzed to distill the best practices implemented in their social media strategies. Multiple case studies are proposed to determine how these best practices explain the desired business outcome in brand equity. The social media strategy concepts, media richness theory and Hagel III and Armstrong’s framework of virtual member development are suggested in guiding our data collection, analysis and interpretation. This research in progress is expected to contribute to the existing knowledge by providing a prescriptive framework of best practices in utilizing Facebook social network, and integrating and extending existing theories to explain the use of social media for developing brand equity
